The PQ appears to think that the notwithstanding clause is a magic wand that makes All The Problems disappear. Talking about “Canadian judges” as if they’re the Other (4 of 9 Supreme Court judges are generally from Quebec). Also, she’s conveniently ignoring the fact that any Charter challenge would start in Quebec’s superior court.
It’s not a phrase used often, but this sort of thing is just really… unCanadian… Quebec can pretend it’s France all it likes and the Quiet Revolution was all well and good, but let’s get real here. It’s not like Canada is filled to overflowing - with overtly religious people or otherwise. Really, what exactly is the “pressing and substantial objective” that the PQ expects to be focused on? Is there an imminent threat to Quebec’s “national identity” that I don’t know about?
Get a life, I say. And start talking about real issues - don’t make boogey-men just to distract from your own lack of substance.
